Rhode Island Mensa Executive Committee Meeting, April 26,
2002 at Eileen Darlings Restaurant
Att: Mona , Denise Jack , Tom G, Laure, Joan, Tom P,

The meeting was called to order at 8:30.
- Treasurer Jack reported that our current balance is
$2277.97. He presented the Annual Treasurers Report. We received a membership bonus
of $33 for reimbursement for any lapsed member who returns and for new members.
- Editor Tom G reported that his total for MOcean
expenses differs slightly from that reported by the Treasurer. The cost averages
$110/month, which does not include postage. The number of issues last year ranged from a
low of 205 to a high of 250. We discussed whether or not we should send the MOcean
to prospective members. This is done on an irregular basis, depending on how many extra
issues there are. This is to be determined by our Publisher Arlene. Our group now receives
an extra 30 cents per year per member towards the newsletter expenses.
- Membership Officer Carol reported we now have 238 members.
(This number was later amended to 228.)
- Testing Coordinator Carol reported that there was a testing
session coming up the next day. She reported sending e-mail to 76 prospects with responses
from 5. Future testing dates are June 15 in E. Providence at 10:30, and National Testing
Day is Saturday, October 19.
- Sunshine Chair Arlene submitted a committee report. She
reports that she received another donation. She is planning an essay contest for members
under age 20 on the topic "If I had 3 wishes
." The prize will be $25.
- Young Adult Coordinator Denise reported on a couple of
successful eventsdinner and movie in March and Beer Brewing in April. Some
first-timers attended the events and all had a good time. Companions are welcome to attend
- Webmaster Margie suggested holding a contest to design a
logo for the Rhode Island Mensa group. She will bring sample logos from other Mensa groups
to the next meeting.
- The Nominating Committee chaired by Arlene Ten Eyck
reported no petition candidates for office and all candidates for office were unopposed.
The ExComm is therefore considered to be: Mona Blais, Local Secretary; Margie Zeller,
Executive Officer; Joan Markert, Treasurer; Carol Pawlak, Membership Chair.

The Editors & Publishers Budget
was presented. Tom recommended setting the budget at $175/month for the newsletter, which
includes postage. It is uncertain how much the postage rate might increase so it was
decided to re-evaluate the budget at the next ExComm meeting. We are given $8.15/year per
member per year, which includes the 30¢ per member stipend increase. Peter moved and
Margie seconded that we approve this budget. Approved.
Mona presented a proposed Speaker Event with
Myrna. There was concern about our ability to cover the speaker charge of $50 along with a
potential room charge of $25. It was felt by some that there would be resistance to
spending more than a few dollars to attend. After much discussion, it was tabled.
National Testing Day will be on October 19 th. All
proctors are encouraged to find a place to hold a testing session.
The meeting adjourned at 9:45 (moved by Carol, seconded by
