ExComm Minutes
Rhode Island Executive Committee Meeting, July 25, 2003 at
Eileen Darling's Restaurant
Att: Voting members: Joan, Lori, Tom, Carol, Margie
Non-voting: Ron, Lori. The meeting was called to order by Tom at 8:27 p.m.
Tom mentioned that
- RIM will be participating in National Testing Day on Saturday, October 18. He has
contacted 20 of our lapsed members. (We will be reimbursed for this effort.)
Reports
- Executive Officer: Margie gave a brief review of the minutes of the last meeting.
Future meeting minutes will first be sent to Tom for comments, then he will distribute
them for approval by the rest of the voting board members. Once approved, they may be
published in the M'Ocean.
- Treasurer: Joan reported that our current balance is $1587.07. The last
Newsletter cost only $118 as it was a smaller edition than usual.
- Membership: Carol reported that we currently have 237 members.
- Testing: Lori reported that 5 sessions were scheduled last month. Two were
cancelled due to lack of interest. Lori held two sessions, testing 2 and 4 people. (Four
were turned away from one of the sessions because it was full.) Tom held the remaining
session for 1 person. (Another candidate cancelled.) Tom, Mona and Carol are available to
test on National Testing Day. It was decided to hold just two sessions on that day and
then follow up later with additional sessions. National Mensa maintains a list of testing
sites, but we are not included. We plan to get our testing schedule added to this list in
the future.
- Editor: Dave was not present. We all agreed that NetPost is successful. Dave
recommended in an e-mail that we abolish the position of publisher as it is no longer
needed. This was moved by Lori, seconded by Carol and passed unanimously. The September
M'Ocean will be sent to editors of all Mensa newsletters. Since we are partially
reimbursed for this, it will cost us only $1.50.
- Programming/Young Adults: Denise was not present.
- Gifted Children: Laure was not present.
- Webmaster: Margie reported that she has disconnected the link to the Bulletin
Board due to lack of interest. She also updated an old address on the Gifted Children's
page. She suggested that all officers check the alias e-mail address on the home page to
see if it is working correctly. Since the Publisher position has been abolished, and there
is no longer a Sunshine Chair, it was agreed that they be removed from the home web page.
Since there is no alias e-mail address available for the Program Chair, Tom volunteered to
make his alias available for this position. Lori P. volunteered to set up an e-mail list
for the use of the RIM members. Much discussion ensued with the result that it was
determined not to give approval for this activity.
Other Business
The RIM By-Laws* are over 10 years old and due for revision. National Mensa has
provided a "minimum standard" to use as a guideline. Lori N. discussed the areas
in need of change and mentioned some other potential changes for us to consider. The
revision of the By-Laws is open to discussion from all RIM members. A special meeting will
be held for this purpose on October 5 (Sunday) at 2pm at Lori's house. Once a revision has
been drafted, it must get approval from National, be published in the M'Ocean, and finally
be voted upon by our members.
Since the Last Friday in October is on Halloween, the next (October) board
meeting has been moved to the Third Wednesday (following dinner at Chelo's).
The meeting adjourned at 9:45.
Respectfully Submitted,
Margie, Executive Officer
